Facelift

If you're a regular visitor, you may have noticed that we now have a very nice new design. Bear with us whilst I iron out any bugs that crop up.

NB - I haven't had time to style the comments just yet, so they look a little bit scrappy.

Fine work, youth. Nice swirls.

Ta.

On a related note, Blogger does some irritating things (such as stuffing in an unnecessary div) which have prevented me automatically italicising the first paragraph of each post. So if you want to do that, use a paragraph tag with class "intro".

I tell a lie. It is possible to get at the first paragraph of each post. If you lovely contributors use paragraph tags in the first place, that is.

Nice, Tom - I like the random tagline. I may add a few more (i'll try not to mess up your style sheet).

When I signed in blogger asked me to upgrade - it assured me a copy of the template would be saved but I erred on the side of caution. What does this mean?

We should also mention to Andy and Dan that p tags can be added in the rich text editor by simply hitting return.

However, I think we should address a very important point. Is it acceptable to italicise the first paragraph, is it even an appropriate use of italics? Maybe I'm displaying my ignorance.

I was going for a newspapery vibe. Typographically, I quite like it.

Can you set the post header div to be a link to the post's permalink?
Also I like being able to see an edit link (previously a toolbox image) when I'm signed in.

Yep - I'll have a muck around with that today. I also need to sort out ordered and unordered lists, as your deconstruction of Andy's first post demonstrates.

I've also noticed that ie6 is making a mess of things too.

That's ok Tom, Ie 6 is only the most common browser in the whole fricking world.

Sorry, I'm a bit grumpy and fed up with hearing things about "browser issues". It's not a browser issue, it's a developer issue. To steal a phase from a colleague: the error usually occurs between chair and keyboard.

Did I mention I was a bit grumpy.

...so grumpy I forgot to type a question mark. That's my day ruined.

I agree. I just don't have a standalone copy of ie6 at home, so I've only just noticed. I shall fix it tonight.

PS You should try developing for IE. It's soul-destroying.

I know, I've heard it's a nightmare. It's also a nightmare when client (usually a director) finds hundreds of bugs because he's looking at a page in an old version of safari over a 56K modem with a dodgy old version of flash installed. You get the worst of both worlds of course as you deal with client side as well.

I'm also not happy with the new archive system. Bit vague I know; call me tonight to discuss.

IE issued cleared up. No probs on the archiving, I had to start from scratch with the template, so now we've got the layout sorted we can start mucking about with the functionality.

Can we lose the border on the ordered (and I presume unordered)list divs?

We can. But don't take that as an excuse to start designing the site by proxy. I get enough of that stuff in my day job.

And can we have three extra permission levels and a video upload facility? By tomorrow.
